We choose one day of the year to honor this planet we call home; but it’s worthy of so much more than a single day of celebration!

There are constant reminders to take a stand against the ways we harmfully impact our environment, but how often is what we say enacted?

It’s important to remember that you don’t need to make the change in an instant, you can help save our soil, air, crops, water, animals, and loved ones by making more conscious daily decisions. Start with these simple tips:

1. Reduce Your Shopping Waste

  • Try out reusable bags and containers when shopping, on the go, and even when storing your food.
  • Opt for items that can be reused or refilled verses things you’ll use once and toss (especially plastic grocery & produce bags)
  • Be mindful of what you purchase! Items that are individually wrapped, single serve, or unnecessarily shipped require significantly more packaging (waste!) and cost you more money in the end. Spare your money for things you won’t throw away
  • Buy in bulk whenever possible! You’ll significantly reduce your garbage – packaging makes up roughly 30% of our waste. All of your family’s favorites from juice, shampoo, and snacks can be purchased at your local Costco, Sam’s Club or BJ’s.

2. Compost Your Food and Yard Waste
Did you know food and yard scraps account for roughly 10% of our garbage? Abandoning this waste for a landfill will prevent it from decomposing into the Earth’s soil naturally. Capture compost’s nutrient-enriched goodness by composting right in your own backyard. This naturally recycled waste is perfect for adding to your garden - it increases your soil’s water retention while giving your plants a boost of nutrients!

3. Grow Your Own Produce
Over 30% of American’s fruits and veggies never even make it to the shelf because it doesn’t look “pretty”. Step away from the overpriced madness and try gardening your own favorites.

  • Why? To start, it’s significantly less expensive. A pack of herbs from your local grocer can cost you the same price of the plant itself
  • Have complete control of what goes in your food by committing to an organic growing routine
  • Have you tasted the crispness of a homegrown bean or sweet carrot? The different is indescribable!

Treat your family to the healthier lifestyle they’ll want to return to time and time again. Simple, daily decisions can ensure a happier, healthier family, Earth, and YOU! Earth Day may only hold one date on the calendar, but it’s our home each and every day of the year. Care for it like you want to call it home tomorrow.
