At its November 14, 2019 public
meeting, the Whitemarsh Township Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to
award local waste company J. P. Mascaro & Sons two comprehensive three-year with two option years waste
service contracts starting on January 1, 2020, and valued at more than $10
million.
The
first contract is for the collection, transportation and disposal of Township
residential waste, and the second is for the curbside collection,
transportation and processing of single stream household recyclables.
"The
Whitemarsh contract is one of the largest municipal contracts in the region,
and our company very much values the Township's business," said company
President, Pat Mascaro, "and we are particularly pleased that the Township
has decided to move away from incineration of its waste and instead has chosen
to have its residential waste disposed of at our modern, company-affiliated
Pioneer Crossing Landfill in nearby Berks County," Mascaro added.
Whitemarsh
Township waste previously went to the Covanta Incinerator in Plymouth Township,
but because of opposition from residents to the Covanta Incinerator and their
concerns about the negative effect that the incinerator has had on the
Township's residents and the community in general, the Township's waste will be
disposed of at Mascaro's Pioneer Crossing Landfill, which is held in high
regard by the Pennsylvania DEP, and which creates "Green Energy" from
landfill gas that is converted into electricity for off-site customer use.
Under
the awarded contracts, Township residents will receive once a week trash and
recycling services, with the recyclables being collected in 64 gallon
contractor-provided toters, and thereafter processed and marketed at Mascaro's
modern, fully-automated 85,000 sq. ft. TotalRecycle single stream recycling
facility in Exeter Township, immediately adjacent to the Pioneer Crossing
Landfill. Under the new contract, yard
waste will also be collected weekly.
