J. P. Mascaro & Sons is a leading provider of waste removal and recycling services in the local region. The Mascaro company has been in existence since 1964 and is a family owned and operated company with many third generation Mascaro family members leading the company.
The company is fully integrated owning and operating its own infrastructure which includes sanitary landfills, recycling centers, composting plants and a host of terminals which house approximately 500 pieces of transportation equipment.
As Earth Day approaches, the company has reported its fiscal year 2022 numbers related to its Sustainability Program. The company has composted over 208,644,400 pounds of material which has been turned into soil nutrients and additives used for a variety of purposes including homes, farms, golf courses, etc. Additionally, the company has processed over 249,376,020 pounds of curbside, commercial and industrial recyclables which have been converted into a multitude of reused and packaged materials. Its local landfill, Pioneer Crossing, has converted 781,042,500 pounds of solid waste into methane gas that is converted to electricity, and used to light and heat literally thousands of homes each year.
Pasquale (Pat) Mascaro, President of the Mascaro companies, indicated his family is proud of its significant investment over the years into state-of-the-art facilities capable of participating significantly in the concept of recycling and reuse of waste materials.
The company is in the design stage of adding an additional 150,000 sq. ft. building to compliment and support its already existing 170,000 sq. ft. of recycling capability in Berks County. Mascaro indicated solid waste companies will be forced to invest substantially into infrastructure in the future to be able to meet the needs of the marketplace. Mascaro enjoys the luxury of having remaining disposal capacity in excess of 50 years; however, this space is precious, and an emphasis must be on recycling and reusing waste materials to extend the life of the remaining landfills.
