Local solid waste company, J. P. Mascaro & Sons, has honored one of its employees, Nelson
Mandela Myers, with its annual “Outstanding Community Service Award,” an award that in this
case is truly deserving.
On January 15, 2013, at 4:40 a.m., Nelson, a seven-year Mascaro employee, was walking
to catch his bus to work when he noticed in a local community playground a very young girl who
was in obvious distress and needed help. Nelson, the father of young children himself,
immediately assisted and consoled the little girl and called authorities for help.
As it turned out, Nelson rescued the young five-year-old student who just the day before
was abducted from her local Philadelphia elementary school and who the city as a whole was
frantically searching for.
Mascaro company President, Pat Mascaro, said, “I cannot think of a greater, more
deserving community service than rescuing a young child from a traumatic and life-threatening
situation, and it gives me great pleasure to recognize and honor Nelson for what he did and for
his outstanding community service effort.”
On May 23, 2013, Nelson was present at the Mascaro Corporate Headquarters building in
Audubon, Pennsylvania to accept his Outstanding Community Service Award. Presenting the
award was Anthony Bergandino, the General Manager of Mascaro’s Bridgeport, Pennsylvania
Operating Division where Nelson works. “Nelson is a great example of the hardworking, good
people we have here at Mascaro, and he is certainly deserving of this award,” said Bergandino.
Along with the Outstanding Community Service Award plaque, Nelson received a Recognition
Gift of $1,000 from the company.
