Before the new year, local solid waste company J. P. Mascaro & Sons had about 750
employees. It will have about 10% more when it starts its five-year, $135 million contract with
Morris County, New Jersey on January 28, 2013, to operate two county-owned waste transfer
stations and to transport and dispose of all waste delivered to those facilities, approximately
400,000 tons per year.
With the new contract, which is one of the largest waste service contracts on the east
coast, comes 65 new Mascaro Company jobs for CDL truck drivers, yard jockey drivers, heavy
equipment operators, diesel mechanics, laborers and management personnel for the two new
operating divisions that Mascaro will open to service the Morris County contract.
The first operating division will be in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, just outside of Scranton
near the Keystone Landfill where Morris County waste will be disposed. This division will
house and maintain the 27 new over-the-road trucks and 68 new waste transport trailers that
Mascaro has purchased for the Morris County contract at a cost of about $7 million. The CDL
drivers for these vehicles are largely being hired in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area and will earn
a base salary between $47,000 and $54,000.
The second operating division will be in Morris County, New Jersey, where the two
county transfer stations are located. The new Mascaro employees at this division will have
complete responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the county transfer stations and for
the loading, tarping and staging of waste transport vehicles at those facilities. These new
Mascaro employees will perform their transfer station duties with over $2 million of new
“yellow equipment” (i.e., front-end loaders, excavators, sweepers, yard trucks, etc.) that Mascaro
has purchased for the Morris County contract.
Company President, Pat Mascaro, said, “Our company is thrilled to have been awarded a
competitively bid waste service contract of this magnitude and to be able to create and fill 65
new quality jobs at a time when many other companies and industries are downsizing rather than
expanding their workforces.”
